Η τράγατα είναι μια σύγχρονη εκδοχή της ομώνυμης παλιάς προσωρινής κατασκευής στα χωράφια για τη διαμονή του επιστάτη, ή στις παραλίες για τον παραθερισμό των ζεστών ημερών. Η τραγάτα αυτή υπερυψώνεται απ’ το έδαφος όχι για να επιβλέπει πια, αλλά για να παρατηρεί τον κόσμο. Η παλιά μορφή παρατήρησης έγινε το σημείο όπου συναντώνται τρεις επιθυμίες διαμονής, τρεις επιθυμίες χώρου. Η επιβίβαση σε μια ιπτάμενη σχεδία, που μπορεί να πλέει πάνω από τη θάλασσα των δέντρων. Η διαμονή σε ένα μεταβλητό κουτί, με τις ελάχιστες διαστάσεις, που μπορεί να ανταποκριθεί στις διαφορετικές ώρες και χρήσεις της μέρας, τις διαφορετικές συνθήκες του φωτός και του αέρα. Η απομόνωση σ΄ ένα υπερυψωμένο ερημητήριο που κλείνεται απ’ τον κόσμο και επικοινωνεί μ΄ αυτόν μέσα απ’ τις χαραμάδες της κατασκευής, ένα χαρακτηριστικό της καλύβας σε σχέση με το σπίτι. Η τραγάτα γίνεται μια συνθήκη παύσης, μέσα απ’ την υπερύψωση απ το έδαφος και την έλλειψη ρεύματος, δίνει μια ευκαιρία αποσύνδεσης. Ο κάτοικος αποσύρεται στην παρατήρηση του κόσμου γύρω, κοντά, αλλά και την εσωτερική παρατήρηση, στην απόσταση του αργού χρόνου.

Η κατασκευή γυμνή, μόνο με το σκελετό της το χειμώνα, ντύνεται με ‘τελάρα’ από καλάμια πλεγμένα που κλείνουν τον χώρο διαμονής. Ο σκελετός της είναι ξύλινος, ενώ οι πληρώσεις κατασκευάζονται επιτόπου από καλάμια που υπάρχουν στην περιοχή. Μια ζώνη απ΄ τα τελάρα πλήρωσης ανακλίνονται ρυθμίζοντας το φως/σκιά, τον αερισμό αλλά και τις θέες. Η οροφή, από το ίδιο υλικό, αναδιπλώνεται κατά το ήμισυ αφήνοντας ακάλυπτο το χώρο στη θέα των αστεριών. Στο πάτωμα καταπακτές εξασφαλίζουν χώρο αποθήκευσης των στρωμάτων στη διάρκεια της μέρας και μια τροχαλία επιτρέπει το εύκολο ανέβασμα αντικειμένων. Στο ενδιάμεσο επίπεδο ανάμεσα στο έδαφος και το ‘κουτί’ της τραγάτας, ένα δίχτυ δημιουργεί επίπεδο αιώρησης και ξεκούρασης. Η πρώτη τραγάτα είναι μια δοκιμή αυτής της συνθήκης διαμονής στο τοπίο. Είναι μια generic κατασκευή. Στήνοντας περισσότερες μονάδες γεννιέται ένα υπερυψωμένο κάμπινγκ, μια κοινότητα μπορεί να φιλοξενηθεί εκεί. Μαζί με τα κτήρια του κτήματος γίνεται ένα ευρύτερο σύστημα κατοίκησης του τοπίου της Παλικής.

Tragata is a modern version of the old homonymous temporary timber frame construction that functioned as a short-term residence for the farmers/harvesters to look out their crops, or even as a beach lodge for the hot summer days. In our case, tragata is not used to oversee the crops, but is rather raised from the ground to provide a vantage point from where to observe the greater context/habitat. This primitive form of observation inspired the overall design concept which is formulated as three core ideas;  the idea of ‘embarking’ on an elevated platform that would float above the tree level, the accommodation in a flexible cube that could adapt in various uses and circumstances during a day, and the enclosure and isolation that this elevated hut can offer by communicating with the world through the thin gaps between the reeds, which compose its external skin.  The Tragata could be described as a ‘breathing space’ within the everyday life, where its resident could experience a primary way of life and disengage with the surroundings. Τhe resident retreats in the observation of the context but also in the observation of the space within, in the realm of slow time.

The main structure of the tragata will be a permanent timber frame construction. Its main living space will be folded with detachable panels that will be made out of reeds abundant on the site. Both the structure and the panels will be assembled on site. The bottom parts of the panels will fold outwards to provide shading during the day, to offer natural ventilation and to enable various views of the surroundings. The roof is assembled under the same principles and has the ability to fold in half, to open up and offer views to the night sky. One hidden hatch/storage space is positioned under the floor plane where mattresses and other belongings could be stored during the day. Also, a pulley mechanism will be attached to the main structure to pull various objects into the tragata space. Between the ground and the tragata deck there will be a hammock/net to create a floating plane for relaxation. The first tragata will investigate this form of transient accommodation. By looking at it as a generic/modular construction, several tragatas could give shape to an ‘elevated camping’ that can become the foundation for the establishment of a community. In tandem with existing buildings in the farm, the tragatas can give shape to an inhabiting system adapted to Paliki’s landscape.
